Review: Girl Friends by Milk Morinaga

Summary: When it comes to grades, bookish high school student Kumakura Mariko is at the top of her class. Socially, however, she is shy and lonely, typically eating lunch by herself. Enter the charismatic and beautiful Ohashi Akko, whose goal is to befriend Mariko and burst her out of her introverted shell.

In the process of transforming “Plain Jane” Mariko into one of the cutest, most popular girls in school, deep feelings begin to emerge that suggest something deeper than friendship. Will these feelings destroy the budding relationship between Mariko and Akko, or will it turn into something else?

So we’re doing something different today, I’m reviewing a manga! This is an f/f manga that’s friends to lovers. It was also a slow burn, the romance taking its time to develop. The character Mariko is a very reserved character, and is pretty focussed on school and not the best at making friends. That is until a girl named Akko offers friendship and slowly, Mariko becomes more confident as the story goes, and she becomes closer with Akko.

After time, their relationship starts to blur the lines between platonic and romantic, which becomes confusing for Mariko, due to some fear of being with a girl. This leads to a pretty drawn out slow burn. I did really enjoy the romance, though the slow burn did get a little tedious and there was some plot points I didn’t find necessary, but when they did start to date it felt really organic. It did show some struggles they both had too.

There was also a great cast of side characters. I really enjoyed their friend groups and they made the series really fun at times. But I did love Mariko and Akko the most. They both had great personalities and it did kind of start off as an opposites attract sort of thing. Seeing them become more comfortable with their relationship was also really great to see, and I think it was done really well.

I was really happy to come across this because I was nervous this might be fetishy and while there was some nudity, it really wasn’t fetishy at all. So that made me really happy. I definitely recommend this if you’re looking for a f/f manga.
