October Wrap Up 2017

September Wrap Up 2017 (1).png

Books read: 19

Radio Silence by Sarah Oseman

Rating: ★★★★★

Rep: bisexual and biracial mc, side demisexual character, side gay and Korean character, side m/m romance, side lesbian character

Trigger warnings: emotional child abuse, suicide attempt, implied depression

I have a full review you can read. Loved it more than I can express. I also found out the demi rep is own voices. This is my new favourite book. Also… I read it twice this month.

Gone, Gone, Gone by Hannah Moskowitz

Rating: ★★★1/2☆

Rep: gay Jewish mc, black gay mc, m/m romance

Trigger warnings: cancer, death

This book kind of fell in the middle with me. I liked the characters and the romance but the plot was hard to read. It did handle grief well but I don’t think it was long enough to do it properly. It was also a little instalovey. Probably my least favourite of Hannah’s books so far.

The Great American Whatever by Tim Federle

Rating: ★★☆☆☆

Rep: gay mc, gay Iranian-American li, m/m romance

I really hated the main character of this book, he was so goddamn annoying. I ended up just skimming it. I also skipped those transcript stuff, didn’t care.

Solitaire by Alice Oseman

Rating ★★★★☆

Rep: side m/m romance

Trigger warnings: mentions of attempted suicide, self harm, and anorexia

I didn’t like this as much as Radio Silence but I did enjoy it in the end. The mc was meant to be unlikeable, so you do have to kind of put up with her. She does have character development in the end.

Nick and Charlie by Alice Oseman

Rating ★★★★☆

Rep: gay mc, bi mc, m/m romance

Pure? Precious? Soft? What else could you want?

The Way I Used to Be by Amber Smith

Rating ★★★★☆

Trigger warnings: Rape

Content warnings: mild sexual content

This is a heavy book but it dealt with the trauma of rape well. I thought it was interesting that Eden became quite hypersexual due to the rape. The author was good at making you angry when they wanted you to be.

This Winter by Alice Oseman

Rating ★★★★☆

Rep: gay mc, bi li, m/m romance

Trigger warnings: mentions of anorexia and suicide attempt, causal bimisia

Not much to say, it was short and sweet. I’ve really come to love this author’s books.

Off the Ice by Avon Gale and Piper Vaughn

Rating: ★★★★☆

Rep: m/m romance, gay mc, gay Puerto Rican mc

Content warnings: explicit sexual content,

Trigger warnings: mentions of homomisia

I have a full review. I really enjoyed it.

Taproot: A Story about a Gardener and a Ghost by Keezy Young

36174464Rating: ★★★★☆

Rep: m/m romance, bi moc mc

I have a full review. It was a short but nice read.

Back Piece by L.A Witt

Rating: ★★★★☆

Rep: Gay mcs, m/m romance

Content warnings: explicit sexual content

Trigger warnings: homomisia, homomisic parents, mentions of emotionally abusive relationships, eating disorder

I read the third book in this series Cover Up a while ago and wanted to go back and read the first two. I really enjoyed it and I liked the romance a lot but be warned one of the characters does deal with homomisic parents. Oh, and it’s really smutty which I guess I should’ve expected after Cover Up.

Pounding Skin by L.A Witt

Rating: ★★★★☆

Rep: m/m romance, bi mc, gay mc

Content warnings: explicit sexual content

Trigger warnings: internalised homomisia, mentons of past homomisia, mentions of toxic masulinity

I really enjoyed this! I liked it more than Back Piece but not as much as Cover Up. But I think I like this couple better? This involves a character realising/coming to terms with being bisexual. I do really recommend this series as a great m/m romance series.

Brokeback Mountain by Annie Proulx

Rating: ★★★★☆

Rep: m/m romance, queer/possibly bi mc

Content warnings: mild sexual content

Trigger warnings: homomisia, mentions of homomisic violence

Decided to read this since I had to watch the movie for an assessment. As a short story, it was good but I wish it was longer to have more development of the relationship. They seemed to have sex out of nowhere. I still really enjoyed it.

Not Your Sidekick by C.B Lee

Rating: ★★★★☆

Rep: black trans guy mc, side f/f romance

I really enjoyed this sequel! I love Bells and I loved reading form his perspective. I can’t talk about it too much since it’s a sequel but I really enjoyed it. Also, Brendan’s crush on him is so sweet.

Eliza and Her Monsters by Francesca Zappia

Rating: ★★1/2☆☆

Not bad, just not for me. I doubted I’d enjoy this anyway but everyone was talking about how much they loved it so I gave it a go.

A Closed and Common Orbit by Becky Chambers

Rating: ★★★1/2☆

I think for me the author is strong when it comes to characters and her world, not so much with plot. It’s not bad but I got bored easily. It’s really character driven so it really falls onto how you feel about character driven books. Also? As much as I love Pepper and Sidra, I miss the Wayfarer crew.

Saga Volume 8 by Brian K. Vaughan, Fiona Staples

Rating: ★★★★☆

Rep: m/m romance, trans character

I feel like this is kind of going downhill. I read this as single issues so it does feel less fluid than when I read the first six in a sitting. I’m curious how this is going to end since it’s been going on for a while now.

Tipping the Velvet by Sarah Waters

Rating ★★★★☆

Rep: lesbian mc, f/f romance

Eh, I liked the characters but I’m definitely not a fan of Sarah Waters writing. I’ve read this and Fingersmith now which are her two most popular books. Probably won’t read her others.

The Witch Sea by Sarah Diemer

Rating ★★★★☆

Rep: f/f romance

I’m not sure what happened exactly but I really enjoyed it.

Girl Made of Stars by Ashley Herring Blake

Rating: ★★★★☆

Rep: bi mc, genderqueer love interest, Korean side character

Trigger warnings: rape, sexual assault, pedophilia, victim blaming

I really enjoyed this! I will be posting my full review closer to the release. I usually post arc reviews soon but since I got this super early I’m gonna wait.

  1. Woah 19 books, that’s so many! I wish I could read that many books in a month, but I just end up doing other stuff or schoolwork instead. I’m so glad that you enjoyed Radio Silence because I just ADORE it! Also I’ve been wanting to read Not Your Sidekick and Not Your Villain for ages so hopefully I can get hold of them soon.

  2. 19 books girl wtf teach me your ways. But also umm I love this wrap up SO MUCH ALICE OSEMAN. You put me to shame I need to get my shit together and catch up on the AO books. The L.A Witt series sounds interesting! I’ve kinda been wanting to read a proper adult romance lately with actual sex in it I don’t know why but maybe I’ll see if I can find one of those books. Also, totally agree with you on A Closed and Common Orbit, I missed the crew the whole time
